Michael Shermer: Why people believe strange things.

Impression

I've noticed that when it comes to the more humorous presentations, the presenter tends to speak a little fast than usual. But Michael then slows down a bit after the introduction to talk more about the important theme of his presentation, where he suggests that although we don't have sound science to prove things, humans use their power of suggestion which leads them to believe strange things such as the Virgin Mary on a cheese sandwich, seeing faces on Mars, or hearing Satanic lyrics in the "Stairway to Heaven" when played backwards.

Strengths

  • Very informative
  • Uses a lot of illustrative examples that are humorous and draws the audiences attention
  • Doesn't use notes
  • Use of props, very funny to watch the marijuana dowsing rod.
  • Interacts with audience

Weakness

  • Should probably speak slower at times
  • The way he walks about the stage is kind of distracting

As a side note, I just thought this video on youtube about power points was pretty funny.

  1. Great TED video and great impressions.

I liked the Death by PowerPoint video too. Funny. We'll be showing something like that on Monday and we'll go over some basics of effective slide design.
